2 killed on Ga. highway after brief pursuit

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say two people who may have been fleeing state police died in a crash near Covington.

WXIA-TV reports that Georgia State Patrol officers were trying to pull over a car they saw passing others and traveling at a high rate of speed on Ga. 36 Thursday night.

After the officer activated the siren, the car sped up and prompted a brief pursuit. Police say the driver eventually lost control of the car and crashed into another vehicle.

Police say the driver and a passenger were pronounced dead on the scene. Their identities were not released. The driver and passenger of the other car were taken to a local hospital.

Additional details were not immediately available. Covington is about 35 miles east of downtown Atlanta.
