Fox In Focus - Leon's Story

Matt Jolley

Meet Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones. He’s worked around death his whole life…and says while it’s not for everyone…it’s what he’s been called to do.

Leon Jones / Bibb County Coroner
“I start my day with prayer every morning. And I know whatever I see…God is standing there with me.”

Leon’s faith plays a major role in everything he does. Aside from his duties as Coroner Leon also mentors to area students. And just like the raw realities he faces everyday…his message to the students is often direct and to the point.

Leon Jones / Bibb County Coroner
“In my own opinion. You have to start when the kids are small. You’ve got to tell them…teach them about right and wrong, respect, character, and positive choices. Ok? You control your own destiny in life. And we talk about that when we go out. We tell the student, respect authority. Ok? Law enforcement…ok. Yes sir…no sir…yes mam…no mam. It’s never ya’ nah’ or uh-huh. And pull your pants up.”

And when I asked Leon about his own legacy…it should come as no surprise that the man who deals with death everyday…has an answer.

Leon Jones / Bibb County Coroner
“If I day today. Right now…I would want my legacy to be a person that always wanted to help people. That’s it. Anytime…24/365. That’s what I want my legacy to be. Nothing else. I don’t want nobody to say “oh he’s the first black coroner of Bibb County”. “He drove an ambulance for 32 years.” “He came out the hood.” All that stuff…I would want my legacy to be a person that loved to help people. Period.

And that’s this weeks Fox In Focus.
