Upson County Woman Battling Flesh Eating Bacteria

NewsCentral Staff

WGXA is monitoring another case of flesh-eating bacteria striking here in middle Georgia.

Upson county's Desiree Alford has no idea how she contracted it, but she does know she has a major medical battle in front of her.

Desiree’s father, David Bagley mentioned to WGXA, “I don't know what I'll do if she's gone.”

Bagley tries to hold it together and be strong for his 28 year old daughter, but it's so hard for him not to worry.

“People don't realize how bad it is until they walk in one of these rooms and see her.”

Cathy and David Bagley say they've seen the news about Aimee Copeland and others with flesh eating bacteria, but never imagined it would happen to anyone they know, much less their daughter.

Desiree’s mother Cathy told WGXA, “Wham, here it is in your family you wouldn't think it would happen to your family. “

Desiree thought she had the flu but when her condition got worse, her parents rushed her to
Upson Regional Medical Center. This is where doctors broke the news that she has flesh eating bacteria.

The Bagley’s say they have no idea where she could have gotten the bacteria. She's a stay at home mom whose world revolves around 4 year old Jermaine and 6 year old Ashlynn.

Where it came from isn't as important as getting rid of it. Doctors have already removed two baseball sized lumps of flesh and muscle.

According to Cathy, “They say they got 90 percent of it, of the infection on her backside. “He had to go in and scrape that out. I saw it, it's just awful.”

The Bagley’s stay at the hospital, nearly around the clock, hoping and praying their daughter will beat this.
