Two Middle Georgia men were arrested and charged with cruelty to animals and dog fighting, after police in Gray were tipped off about a possible dog fight taking place in a wooded area between Wayne Street and North Street, on September 16.
According to an arrest report, two Gray police officers were walking in the wooded area around 5:30 p.m. when they spotted 27-year-old Antonio Williams of Gray, 19-year-old Lewis Pitts of Gray, and two other black males. Williams was walking a brown dog with a chain.
All four people began to run when they saw police. Williams and Pitts were arrested, but the other two people escaped by running deeper into the wooded area, near the Gray Gardens Apartments.
Two dogs were recovered from the area, both with heavy wounds to the face and neck. According to the report, two trees in the area had the Crip street gang six point star, and the Folk street gang pitchfork painted on them.
According to the report, both Pitts and Williams said they came across the fight during a walk through the woods, but did not own the dogs or have anything to do with the fight besides watching it.
Due to injuries, one of the dogs has been euthanized. Both Pitts and Williams have been charged with dogfighting, aggravated cruelty to animals, and obstruction. Pitts was also charged with theft by receiving stolen property.
