Turkey hunting season begins March 23

NewsCentral Staff

Hunters across Georgia are preparing for the opening of turkey season March 23.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says statewide reproduction of the birds declined by 30 percent last year, but hunters shouldn't notice the fewer turkeys until next year. The current population is estimated at 335,000.

Conservation rangers remind hunters to have the proper licenses and play it safe when you're hunting.

"Conservation rangers will be out in full force this weekend looking for anybody that is not abiding by state game laws. They need to make sure they know their surroundings, make sure they let someone know where they're going before they leave especially if they're hunting by themselves," said Conservation Ranger David Fisher.

With a bag limit of three gobblers per season, hunters have from March 23rd until May 15th to harvest their birds. Hunters are always reminded to get landowner permission before hunting.
