Thirty-one gaming machines seized in Baldwin raid

Amber Jones

It has been over six months since the Baldwin County Sheriff's office began a county-wide investigation on gambling in the area.

The final raid left law enforcement officers with 31 of the illegal machines. Four Baldwin County businesses are caught contributing to to and ongoing gambling problem in that community.

"Well over the last few years we have had a tremendous number of complaints from families and ministers and people though out the community."

After hearing concerns about illegal gambling machines in local businesses, authorities decided to take the problem into their own hands, as they begin to put a stop to what they believe is huge problem for their citizens.

"We worked with our drug task force and conducted an undercover investigation to do illegal gambling."

Gaming machines, like the ones seized in the investigation, are only supposed to be used for entertainment. A six month long investigation by the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department determined that these machines where used by four locations for an illegal profit.

"The four stores that we served warrants on were the four stores that gambled with us illegally."

After seizing 31 gaming machines from local stores, the owners of these stores and the people that that issued the monetary wins, will be punished according to the law.

The businesses included in the illegal gaming/gambling raid:

Solo Tobacco & Food, 1310 Irwinton Rd, Milledgeville, GA
Sonny's Brew'n Que, 120 West Greene Street Milledgeville, GA
EZ Mart, 1660 N Columbia Street, Milledgeville GA
CB&T Pool Hall, 2693A Irwinton Road, Milledgeville, GA

Sheriff Massee says that he doesn't believe the punishment fits the crime.

"The will be charged with commercial gambling. Most of these charges are going to be misdemeanor charges. It's really something that needs to be addressed by the legislation."

Sheriff Massee says he feels like these investigations are going to help a lot of families and says they will continue to investigate businesses that may be participating in illegal gambling.
