This season NewsCentral is letting you, the fans, vote to decide which high school football match up will be our Big Game. This week fans chose to see the defending GISA champions.
Tattnall Square Academy plays John Milledge Friday in their home opener.
Last week against Westfield the Tattnall defense came up big, they allowed just three points and tallied two with a safety but the offense failed to score a single point. Still, the Trojans are not worried. Slow starts are nothing new at Tattnall.
"We never have been quick starters around here. Of course, we've been here a lot of years and hopefully this team understands what it's all about. It's not where you start but it's where you finish," says Barney Hester, Tattnall's Head Football Coach.
Tattnall is used to finishing in the GISA State Championship. The Trojans have won four state titles since 2001 including last season. Expectations are high and inexperience is not an excuse.
"It's kind of expected here, when you play at Tattnall you're playing for a championship tradition and these guys know what's expected. They're just going to have to come up and do it," says Tyler Ward, a Senior linebacker at Tattnall.
Ward played for last year's state championship team. This year he faces a new challenge, leading his young teammates on and off the field.
"Usually I'm looking up to somebody who knows what they're doing and usually it's a lot of Seniors but this year it's different. They know what's expected. They know the shoes they've got to fill and they know what they've got to do to play here," says Ward
Tattnall plays their home opener Friday night. The Trojans will have their hands full with a tough John Milledge team.
"They've got as much speed as anybody we've seen yet. I think their defensive and offensive lineman are probably more athletic than either team we've seen yet. Skill guys are good speed. Quarterback throws the ball well. We're just excited about the possibility of playing a good football team and they are one," says Hester.
Central Georgia football fans made Tattnall versus John Milledge our Big Game this week. NewsCentral will be there live Friday before the game. Then you can see highlights at 10:45pm on FOX.
