Study Break: Action Plan for Students With Asthma

Johanna Torres

This back to school season the American lung Association in Georgia is urging parents with children that have asthma to have an action plan.

Chevonnia Jones with North Central Health District in Macon says, “If they don’t have an action plan it’s just prohibits the child from getting the proper care that they need ,we would like for the child to get the best care that they can and with asthma the faster we react than the faster we can help that child.”

The American Lung Association also suggests that a parent should visit the child’s school nurse, teachers and anybody that is part of your child’s day to day activities and make sure they have a copy of their action plan as well as proper training in Asthma 101.

Jones says, “It just helps to give a relationship with the child as well as the officials at the school to what the child may need in case they have an asthma episode.”

The action plan includes background information on the child, the actual kind of medication they use and when it should be given to them. Also some of the triggers or symptoms of that child and emergency contact information in case the medication does not work.

And just because your child has not had any recent episodes of an asthma attack, they say you should still schedule check up appointments with their doctor. This will help to make sure that your child’s asthma continues to be effectively controlled.

Jones says, “You need to re evaluate the asthma plan on an annual basis. The child and the parent can then speak with the doctor as well as ask any other questions and there may be something new happening in the child asthma profile.”
