MACON, Ga. (AP) - A trial has been scheduled for a man accused of dismembering a Mercer University law student in 2011.
Stephen McDaniel is set to go to trial Sept. 9. He was arrested in the June 2011 death of 27-year-old Lauren Giddings. Authorities say McDaniel was the woman's next-door neighbor and a classmate at Mercer University. Her torso was found in a trash bin near her apartment and police have not recovered the rest of her remains.
District Attorney David Cooke last week said he would not seek the death penalty against McDaniel, and eliminating capital punishment from the case could move it to trial faster.
The victim's mother, Karen Giddings, told The Telegraph of Macon she objected to McDaniel being sentenced to death on a religious basis.
