A local organization recognizes kids with good grades and honors them at a back to school event on Sunday.
Unity in the Community kicked off its first ever "Smart is the New Cool" concert at Shrine Park .Students who received “A's” and “B's” last semester could bring in their report card and get a wrist band that allowed them to use the bounce houses for free, get a hot dog, and enter in a drawing to win prizes. More than a thousand people came out for the event and organizer Al Tillman said while he hopes everyone enjoys it, he wants the honor students to know their hard work is appreciated.
"Sometimes we don't do enough for those kids,” he said. “we sort of look out for the ones that are not doing as well, but sometimes I think we need to reach back and thank those A and B students and those kids that don't have a problem with their school work and their teachers."
Unity in the Community will also host an anti-bullying event in December at city hall.
