Salvation Army Provides Heat Relief Shelters

Linnie Supall

The climbing temperatures have some people looking for a cool place to stay. NewsCentral’s Linnie Supall explains how the shelters at the Salvation Army are open to accommodate those in need.

“It’s very hard for me because I’m not used to this heat. I make sure I take care of myself by drinking lots of water,” said Katherine Brown.

So many people are finding their own ways to beat the summer heat, but as temperatures continue to climb, those without access to a cool place to stay make their way to heat relief shelters.

The Salvation Army opens its doors to the public when the heat index hits 104 degrees and many people who make their way to the shelters are not just here for heat relief, but also for a place to call home.

The Salvation Army has 86 beds to accommodate those in need and hate turning people away when capacity is reached.

“We're grateful that we have a place they can come to. It's not the Ritz Hotel by no means, but it is cooler than outside,” says Major Fred Thornhill of the Salvation Army.

Katherine Brown has been staying at the Salvation Army since May and says finding a job is even more challenging amidst the stifling temps.

“It's very difficult to be out in this sun like this looking for jobs. Those with health problems have an even more difficult time because they could drop out while they're walking,” added Brown.

Brown says the people in the facility find strength in each other during these difficult times.

“We pray to be protected and that's why I think so many of us make it out of there in that heat. We ask god to protect us and let our minds stay strong so we aren't harmed out there,” says Brown.
The Salvation Army needs your help to keep those shelters open. Anything from supplies to monetary donations are welcome.
