Residents upset with historic Vineville house demolition plan

A group of area residents are upset with the Islamic Center of Macon on Vineville Avenue over plans to tear down a house.
The center wants to tear down a house at 112 Lamar Street and replace it with a parking lot and playground. The issue was set to be discussed at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on Monday, but was tabled. One resident against the plan says the neighborhood association wants to see every home restored and saved, not destroyed.
"Once these older homes are destroyed, there's no retrieval. I'm a lifelong resident of the Vineville Neighborhood Association and we want to see every house saved," said Melissa Kuipers.
A spokesperson for the Islamic Center says they want a common solution for the issue. They say attendance has increased, forcing people to park on the street and a nearby nursing home. The center says they're not asking for anything more than any other church in the area would want and they don't want to create a hassle.
The issue was tabled until August 23rd.
