A deal is in the works to keep the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Macon.
Currently, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, which is owned by the state, is leased to the Development Authority of Bibb County. NewTown Macon manages the operations and is responsible for the $130,000 a year in rent.
NewTown Macon wants to purchase the building to reduce costs with the hope the hall of fame here.
"We would like to own the building so we don't have to raise money to pay the $130,000 rent each year. Or, at a minimum, reduce the rent to a more reasonable figure considering that is a statewide hall of fame, not just for Macon," said NewTown Macon President and CEO Mike Ford.
Ford says there is no deadline for a purchase deal. NewTown Macon has pitched the idea to lawmakers to gain support at the statehouse. Ford says if a deal is struck, it would happen later this year after the legislature convenes this year.
