"Life is very important, a lot of people won't say that, but for me as a minister, life is very important," Pastor Tony Lowden responds to Tuesday's call by the American Congress of Obstetrician and Gynecologists for the sale of contraceptive pills over the counter.

Dr. R. Paul Roddenberry is a Doctor at OB GYN Specialists and thinks idea is risky, “I think that there are certain risk that are involved that make that a questionable recommendation."

Their push is nothing new, but now the group says they have evidence validating the "the pill" is safe and effective.

Lowden is the youth pastor at Lundy Chapel Baptist Church in Macon and he says the move may be a good one. "I think it is good for women, I do,” says Pastor Lowden. “That may not have insurance that may not have a doctor to prescribe it for them."

Lowden does however have concerns about age requirements for purchase. He adds, "I do think that when we have our teenagers to buy over the counter, they need to have their parents involved."

The ongoing argument against over the counter sales of birth control are health risk.

“It’s more risk to your life to be pregnant that to be than to take the pill," says Dr. Roddenberry.

According to the American Congress of Obstetrician and Gynecologists, birth control is safe for most women, the risk for heart attack and stroke, while taking birth control pills, only increase in women 35 years old and older who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day or in women who have other risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

"If you look at the overall health risk of taking birth control, it is quite low,” adds Dr. Roddenberry.

Birth control pills have health benefits in addition to preventing pregnancy it treats disorders like fibroids and endometriosis. Some pills also help to control acne.

As far as regulations go, Lowden says sometimes you just have to separate church and state. “We try to legislate morality and we can't legislate morality."
