WGXA has new details in a story we first brought you Tuesday. Macon-Bibb fire investigators now say an early Tuesday morning fire in downtown Macon is not only a case of arson, but also a case of burglary.
Police say they arrived at the building at 400 Poplar Street Lane around 2:35 a.m. New Year's Day because the burglar alarm was going off, but officers quickly found smoke and called the fire department.
Sergeant Ben Gleaton of the Macon-Bibb Fire Department says the building's sprinklers put out 3 small fires on the first and second floors. Police later discovered several items were taken from the premises.
The building is owned by Mercer University and serves as the homes of the Macon Symphony Orchestra and Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful.
If anyone has any information about the burglary or arson, you are asked to call Sergeant Ben Gleaton at (478) 751-2713 or CrimeStoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME. There is a $10-thousand reward being offered.
