Macon Judiciary Circuit District Attorney - Elect David Cooke says he is taking no time off after beating incumbent Greg Winters by more than 8,000 votes in Tuesday's general election.

"(The voters) knew the D.A.'s office needed to do a better job, and that was a specialty of mine, and I knew that protecting our families was the most important thing we could do," Cooke said.

Cooke spent parts of Wednesday meeting with members of his victim's advocate team, taking the initiative toward prosecuting sex crimes. It's something he says Winters did not do.

"It takes someone who's really dedicated to these kinds of crimes to make sure that we get justice for these victims and make sure that they get their day in court," Cooke said.

Cooke says rape cases and other sex crimes are the most difficult to prove and therefore the hardest to prosecute. That's one reason why Cooke called Winter out, citing eight rape cases handled by the District Attorney that were dismissed.

While Winters first denied the cases, then had excuses for each one, Cooke says he just wants to move on and prepare to take office in January.

"At this point it's time to do a better job of handling rape cases, child molestation cases, domestic violence cases, the kinds of cases that affect our families the most," Cooke said.

Cooke says he will meet with all current prosecutors on person to person basis for evaluation. He also plans to hire a new attorney that specializes in the prosecution of sex crimes and domestic violence.

A number of phone calls and messages to Greg Winters went unanswered Wednesday. His secretary said he was unavailable. When asked when he would be available, his secretary said she did not know.
