Moving Historic Macon Houses

Alexis Sergeant

Three historic homes were relocated from Coleman Avenue to Oglethorpe Street to make room for Phase II of the Lofts at Mercer Village.

People from all throughout Central Georgia came to watch the big move.

Hugh Braswell drove 90 miles to watch, he has been moving homes for sixty-one years but never of this magnitude. "You have to have horologic jacks. A unified system to pick up the whole thing, chimneys and all at one time," says Braswell.

Georgia Power took four days to prepare for the move. "We've had to mobilize our crews to prepare to move several sections of overhead distribution power line," says Ken Wall.

Braswell says there is a lot to take into consideration for such a large move. "As tall as this is you don't want to lean sideways or up and down very much. You want to keep it as level as you can..and things like putting this plywood down on the walk way is to not mess up the brick," says Braswell.

Many believe that by saving Macon's history is making Macon's history.

"For historic Macon and Mercer for development that's building the new lofts to move and reposition these houses to save such an investment of our history is really amazing," says Wall.
