Movie "42" Films In Downtown Neighborhood

The movie “42” continued filming in a downtown Macon residential area on Tuesday.

Actors Chadwick Boseman, Nicole Beharie, Andre Holland and about 20 extras filmed scenes on High Street. Production in the morning started filming in a house but later moved outside to the street.
Boseman plays legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson in this time period piece. The scenes shot are in the early stages of the film. Robinson needs a place to stay when he arrives for spring training in Florida in 1946.

Macon is a couple hundred miles away from the sunshine state but that is where Hollywood movie magic comes in. Media liaison for “42” Ernie Malik said palm trees were placed on the lawn as set dressing to recreate the Florida home located in a upscale African American neighborhood.

The crew and actors rehearsed the scene multiple times before filming.

"It's choreography,” Malik said. “You want to make sure the timing is right and the camera movement. They'll do a camera blocking test where the camera moves to capture the moment."

Boseman along Holland who plays sportswriter, Wendall Smith, drove down the street in a period car. They were shooting the scene where Robinson and his wife along with Smith meet the family that will host them while he’s in spring training.

Filming on the street this early in the week was not part of the original plan but the rain came and changed the production’s schedule.

“Weather comes in and affects and exterior location, we don't shut down,” Malik said. “We can't afford that luxury because we have a certain amount of days in which to complete the project."

Producers opted to stay at the indoor locations Tuesday in order for production to keep rolling.

"Even though the sun is out right now, we're still shooting indoors because for us to move all of this equipment and the 200 people we have working here back to the stadium would take two to three hours of our work day," Malik said.

Production stayed on High Street on Tuesday and will be moving back to Luther Williams Field on Wednesday if the sun continues to shine. Several streets and part of Central City Park will be closed as filming continues. Signs will be posted to remind people to move their car if they’re in the area.
