The Georgia Department of Labor says the unemployment rate in the Middle Georgia region rose to 9.0 percent in December, up from 8.6 percent in November. The rate was 9.2 percent in December 2011.

The Labor Department says the rate rose because there were 171 more new claims for unemployment benefits in construction, manufacturing, wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing, and administrative and support services.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 6.6 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha had the highest at 11.4 percent.
