The Georgia Department of Labor says the unemployment rate in the Middle Georgia area declined to 8.6 percent in November, down from 8.8 percent in October. The rate was 9.1 percent in November 2011.

The labor department says the rate declined because of fewer new layoffs, represented by first-time claims for unemployment insurance benefits.

There were 622 fewer layoffs in construction, manufacturing, retail trade, transportation and warehousing, information services, financial services, professional and technical services, administrative and support services, educational services, health care and social assistance, and accommodations and food services.

Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 6.2 percent, while Dalton had the highest at 11 percent.
