Mayoral position of new Macon-Bibb County government up for grabs

NewsCentral Staff

Former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis, Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commissioner Al Tillman, and former mayoral candidate David Cousino have all stated their intention to run for the mayoral position of Macon-Bibb County's new government.

Ellis says he was already planning to run for Mayor again even if consolidation didn't pass, and now he will just have to move up his campaign schedule.

"It doesn't give me as much time, but it gives me enough time to get out and put together a very credible campaign, a winning campaign," Ellis said.

Tillman says he is creating an exploratory committee to investigate whether or not he should put down the money to qualify.

"With this opportunity we're just going to see where we go from here, over the next three to four months, by the end of this year, and see in fact, if this is what people decide they want me to do," Tillman said.

Current Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and Bibb County Commission Chairman Sam Hart wouldn't say whether they were going to run or not. Both said they were going to focus their time on making sure the transition to a consolidated government runs smoothly.
