Macon's "Sugar Boy" Escorted Home

A Macon soldier hailed a hero is escorted home early Tuesday morning.

Army Sgt. Thomas Barksdale's remains were identified and returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

Barksdale, of the 2nd Infantry Division, was reported missing in action north of Kujang, North Korea in the Battle of Ch'ongch'on in 1950.

Barksdale's body and family received an escort by local law enforcement from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to the Jones Brothers Mortuary on Millerfield Road. Barksdale was known to his family as "Sugar Boy".

The funeral is planned for a noon service on Friday at the Jones Brothers Mortuary with burial at 2:30 p.m. at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville.
