Macon councilman offers wheelchair safety rules

MACON, Ga. (AP) - A Macon city councilman is proposing an ordinance to make it easier and safer for disabled citizens to use wheelchairs and electric scooters on city roads.
Councilman Frank Tompkins has introduced the ordinance that would establish basic safety rules for the scooters and motorized wheelchairs. One rule would require the scooters or chairs to have reflectors or lights. He also wants the city to install plug in stations to help keep the chairs and scooters powered.
Karen Cooper, the Georgia AARP associate state director, said the need for better safety for motorized wheelchairs has been discussed.
AARP officials said there's a need to make sure wheelchair users, have clear traffic rules to follow.
The proposed ordinance has been referred to council's Public Safety Committee.
