Macon Woman Says She was Wrongfully Evicted

Clinton Bourgeois

Bridgette Tillman has been renting a home on Burton Street for only three months and now she is being forced to move out.

"The Sheriffs were saying I had to be out by February 13," said Tillman.

Tillman was served with an eviction notice for failure to pay rent, but she says that's just not the case.

"The landlord stated that he wanted the full month's rent of Section 8 plus rents pay," said Tillman. "The judge said he couldn't grant him that, only my portion."

Well, Tillman lives under Government Housing in a home that initially passed inspection but Tillman says it shouldn't have.

"I found that it had major problems, plumbing problems, electrical problems," said Tillman. "

She says she's had a stove, a refrigerator, two microwaves and two coffee pots destroyed because of those problems.

"I notified Government Housing that they needed to send someone out to reinspect the property. They did. It failed," said Tillman.

Under law, Government Housing will not pay rent on a house that failed inspection. So Tillman says her landlord wants her to foot the bill. But since the court ordered her to continue paying her post inspection rate, Tillman says her landlord wants her out by tomorrow.

"I thought I would have had thirty days to move but I didn't. It kind of put me at a disadvantage," says Tillman. "So I tried to sell some belongings, but the rest of it, I dont know whats going to happen to it."

Tillman says much of this could have been avoided if not for a lack of communication.

"Can't constantly get him on the phone, there are three different addresses he is using. When you try to call him he won't call you back," said Tillman. "No response on the phone, like you would need to talk to a tenant and a landlord."

NewsCentral was able to get in contact with Tillman's landlord. He said when he checked in January the house was in good condition. He also added that Tillman only paid a portion of her rent and still owes money in late fees.

Somehow, the fact that more poor people are on welfare, receiving more generous payments, does not seem to have made this country a nice place to live - not even for the poor on welfare, whose condition seems not noticeably better than when they were poor and off welfare. Something appears to have gone wrong; a liberal and compassionate social policy has bred all sorts of unanticipated and perverse consequences, yes that includes Section 8!
