A day of fun in the sun in Macon ends in tragedy.
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones tells NewsCentral, 41-year old Asfar Jeffery of Decatur drowned in the Ocmulgee River near the Frank Amerson Water Works Park around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. An autopsy is expected on Friday.
Witnesses on the scene say Jeffery was floating on the water and wading around, but could not swim. They say the current took him to deeper water and he began to panic.
Bibb County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Sean DeFoe tells NewsCentral, the Macon-Bibb Fire Department’s Rescue Dive Team recovered Afar’s body close to the area where he went under.
DeFoe says Jeffery's brother, Asad attempted to reach his brother when he also began to go under. Asad was able to reach an inner tube a park attendant threw to him.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the Bibb County Sheriff's Office at 478-746-9441.
