Macon Man Dead After Flames Engulf Home

NewsCentral Staff

A Macon man is dead after a fire tears through his East Macon home on Sunday afternoon, completely destroying the inside of the house.

Horace Maddox, 60, was found dead of smoke inhalation in the back bathroom at his 853 Northern Street home off Gray Highway. He rented the home that is located behind Fincher’s Barbeque. Bibb County coroner Leon Jones said firefighters were called to the scene at 12:04 p.m. and had the flames under control quickly. Jones said there weren’t any signs of burns on Maddox’s body. Investigators were on the scene but Jones said the fire appears accidental. A friend of Maddox who saw him minutes before the house went up in smoke says he's still shaken up from what happened.

"I feel really sad,” neighbor Ricky Scott said. “I don't know how I'm going to take it because I'm not going to be able to see him on the porch no more."

No other people were inside the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
