A local hospital brings awareness to breast cancer with its month long celebration.

The Medical Center of Central Georgia kicked off "Paint The Town Pink" on Tuesday at a boutique shop in the hospital. The event promotes and educates people about breast cancer. More than 230,00 women were diagnosed with it last year. Hospital organizers said breast cancer is a serious issue but they want to do fun activities to make women aware of the disease.

"It's just really a fun way to bring attention to a very serious cause,” Oncology Services Director Nancy White said. “If caught early breast cancer is so curable and that's our ultimate goal is to bring women in for screenings when they're appropriate and to catch it early."

The next event will be a breast cancer symposium at the wellness center in downtown Macon on Friday.
