Last Minute Shoppers Search For Gifts On Christmas Eve

Cristen Drummond

People on Christmas Eve headed out to the malls to do some last minute Christmas shopping and to avoid a crowd.

The department store Dillard’s didn’t look very crowded but that’s what some shoppers said they wanted while looking around for their gifts.

"Everybody (has) done their shopping already so it's just easier to go around and pick what you want," last minute shopper Christopher McLennan said.

"Usually come in here on Christmas Eve,” last minute Christmas shopper Stephen Amerson said. “It's not that bad not like usually you know always packed."

Stephen Amerson and his group of friends make shopping on Christmas Eve an annual tradition.

"Come out with the guys, have lunch and basically it's just time for us to spend together," he said.

Amerson said he and his friends do majority of their shopping ahead of time but wait to buy something for their lucky ladies the day before Christmas.

Under store policy employees couldn’t speak with WGXA on camera but some did say they've seen a lot more men shopping over the last couple of days.

"We're always last minute and not responsible," Amerson said.

While rain may have kept some people at home, some shoppers said it motivated them to come to the mall.

"I felt like there would be no crowds out and about today and I'm right there's no crowds,” last minute shopper Diane Brown said. “You can just about walk through.”

Beating the crowds may bring some people out the day before Christmas but for some it's just the only day they have to purchase gifts.

"Just never had the time to go out shopping," McLennan said.

The shops at River Crossing and the Macon Mall will be closed on Christmas but will re-open the day after.
