Hundreds Head to the Polls for Saturday Voting

Cristen Drummond

Hundreds of people line up outside the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections to cast their ballot during Saturday voting.

"I think it's convenient,” early voter Richard Plummer said. “Sometimes when you're working during the week it can be kind of a hassle."

Plummer works at a body shop in town. He’s one of more than 1,200 people in Bibb County who visited the elections office on Saturday to take advantage of weekend voting.

"It's convenient for a lot of people, Plummer said.”So therefore the line may be a little bit longer."

Even though the line was long, some voters said it’s a good sign in regards to people wanting to be involved in this year’s election process.

"I'm very encouraged by the number of people that are voting and I think other people are serious about it as well," early voter Cathy Padgett said.
While the time to get processed may seem long, Board of Elections Supervisor, Elaine Carr, said it's faster now than four years ago.

"We're getting them through a whole lot quicker now because we have more people out front,” Carr said. ”Even though the line looks long, they're moving very quickly."

Carr said this year seven people are processing voters instead of three. While there was discussion to open a remote site this election season, Carr said Bibb County Commissioners decided to have a trial run with more processors before making that decision.

With a heavy early turnout, supervisors said they expect a lot of people to cast their vote on November 6.

"It shows the voters are concerned,” Carr said. “That means they're going to turnout at the precincts on Election Day because we can judge a turnout at the precinct by early voters."

More than 13,000 people have voted in Bibb County since early election started nearly two weeks ago.The Board of Elections offices will be open next week for early voting but closed November 4 and 5. People who don’t cast an early vote at the elections office before the fifth, must go to their precinct on November 6 to cast their ballot.
