Thousands of Nationwide Insurance customers have had their personal and private information accessed illegally.

Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens was notified that the computer network belonging to Nationwide Insurance was criminally attacked, giving the criminals unauthorized access personal and private information for more than 28-thousand Georgia members and/or potential policyholders.

Nationwide has issued a statement saying they will do the following:

* Offer affected members and applicants free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services from Equifax for at least one year.

Nationwide mailed notices to all affected individuals last Friday.
