The spectre of racism reared its head at Mercer University in the form of a flyer. It was anonymously posted in several residence halls. The flyer points out that there are no White Student Organizations on campus and calls for November and December to be recognized as White History Months saying, "It is just as fair to have White History Month/s as it is to have Black History Month/s."
The existence of the flyer could suggest that there are problems with race relations on Mercer's campus but the students WGXA spoke with say that's not the case.
"I do believe its just an isolated incident because Mercer, when you meet the students its so diverse you cannot actually be racist here. It's like impossible. " -Victoria/Mercer Student
"When you come to Mercer you have a chance to interact with everybody and I believe everybody here is friends. Just because we all spend a lot of time together." -Arkel/Mercer Student
Mercer President Bill Underwood sent an email to the Mercer Community encouraging students and faculty to "redouble our efforts to ensure that being a community of respect means more than simply an ideal at Mercer."
Mercer officials declined to talk on camera about the issue for fear of giving the flyer and its still unknown author, more attention.
