First Day of School Leaves Some Students Nervous

Cristen Drummond

Summer vacation is over for most students in Central Georgia as kids head back to class on Monday morning.

The end of summer is more than just missing out on trips to the pool that has some students anxious about the start of school which includes meeting new friends and learning to cope with new styles of teaching.

"I had a lot of troubles last year with teachers and you know I'm just hoping that I get a good teacher and I'm just really kind of nervous about it actually,” Howard Middle School student Anna Knight said.

Knight will begin her first day as a sixth grader on Monday but she decided to spend her last day of freedom with family at the Museum of Arts and Sciences trying to shake her nerves about the beginning of school

"I've had a lot of bad experiences in elementary school,” she said. “I'm just hoping that now I'll start fresh."

Like many students, Knight has high hopes of adjusting to a new school which includes adjusting to new classes, teachers and peers. However, as her sister Mamie Knight, a Howard High School senior, says the start of school means the end of summer.

“It's kind of a bittersweet thing,” Knight said. “I'm excited for school to start. I'm excited to learn new things. I'm excited to spend time with my friends.

The sisters may be divided about going back to class but one thing they're not worried about is their safety at school.

"I've always felt very safe going to public school,” Knight said. “I've gone my whole life, high school, middle school, elementary career and so has my sister and we've never had any threats posed to us."

However, some families disagree.

"You don't know what these children are doing now,” concerned grandparent Debra Talbert said. “What they got in their book bag? What they got going on, (with) them gangs and stuff like that."

While gangs may be an afterthought for Knight, it doesn’t mean she’s not dreading her first day.

"It's going to be really hard to come back,” she said.

While the Knight sisters may be a bit anxious at the start of the school bell on Monday, they can look forward to a mini vacation when Labor Day rolls around in few weeks.
