The first church in Macon to racially integrate celebrated 50 years as a congregation on Sunday.
Members of Covenant Life Cathedral on Bloomfield Rd. gathered to commemorate the church's jubilee by singing and rejoicing in the journey of their congregation starting in the early sixties. A PowerPoint presentation told the history of the church including its remarkable feat of being the first church in Macon to integrate in 1968. Pastor Robert Hunnicutt said this is a triumph for his congregation.
"We're proud to know that we were started in 1962 and today in 2012, we are still celebrating what God started in this community 50 years later."
Members ate a celebratory dinner after the service. Hunnicutt said for the church to continue another half a century his congregation should continue to be active in the community.
