Fire Destroys Two Eastman Businesses

NewsCentral Staff

A lucky cat was rescued by members of the Eastman Fire Department in a fire that destroyed two businesses on Main Street.

The cat belongs to the owner of Jonathan's Salon and was saved by the same thing that saved the other buildings on the block - a firewall built into the building.

Eastman Fire Chief Carl Johnson told WGXA a a firewall "pretty much stopped the fire."

The fire began at Soo's Fashion Shop.

Kim Soo, owner of Soo's Fashion Shop told WGXA, "I didn't realize actually what happened. After a minutes more smelling. I open the back door and there's smoke's everywhere."

Johnson went on to tell WGXA "We know when it started the fire was toward the back of the building. It appears to be in the void of the ceilings they had different ceilings in there. That's really all we know at this point."

Area residents lined the street, watching as members of several local fire units fought against the flames.

The fire completely gutted Soo's Fashion Shop and the Lunchbox at Roy's. Other businesses on the block were spared destruction but suffered some smoke and water damage.

No one was hurt in the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.

As for the cat - her owner was taking her to the veterinarian to get checked out.
