Fire Breaks Out at Lullwater at Bass Apartments in Macon

NewsCentral Staff

People at a north Macon apartment complex came home from work to find fire trucks and smoke-filled air.

Around eight trucks, including two ladder trucks, moved in to fight the fire at the Lullwater at Bass Apartments just before 6 Wednesday night.

The firewalls did their job in keeping the flames from spreading, but it also made it difficult for firefighters to move in and knock down the flames.

Firefighters got the fire out several times only to have smoldering pockets reignite again. It may have been worse if it wasn't for quick thinking resident.

Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins says their early theory is that someone dropped a cigarette near a column. The flames slowly smoldered inside and then climbed up into the attic.

It will take a full investigation to confirm that's what happened.

There were about 16 units in the building. Many of those people are staying somewhere else until repairs are complete.
