Deer season started on Saturday as hunters in Central Georgia geared up for the hunt.
Archery hunters visited sporting retailers to pick up the essentials before drawing their bow and arrow for opening day. Georgia attracts more out of state hunters than anywhere else in the country according to the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and can bring in more than $670 million dollars in retail sales. Even though hunting with a bow can be more difficult, last year, more than 118,000 bow hunters harvested more than 68,000 deer.
"There's more skill and more tactic,” archery hunter Michael Grant said. “With a rifle, you can shoot from a couple hundred yards away and they can't see you or hear you. With a bow you have to wait until they get right up on you, 15 to 20 yards. You have to be very quiet, very strategic and you almost got to be invisible."
Hunters must have a valid hunting license, big game license and a current deer harvest record. Anyone hunting on wildlife management areas (WMA) must also have a WMA license. Rifle season begins in October.
