Deal struck to make change in state's car tax law

NewsCentral Staff

ATLANTA (AP) - State lawmakers have reached agreement on a deal to fix one aspect of Georgia's new car tax law that drew complaints about car leasing.

The deal is expected to fix unintended consequences of Georgia's new title tax law that took effect Friday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a chief problem with the law was a double tax on car leases.

The issue affects many consumers since leases account for 33.8 percent of all new car transactions in Georgia.

The change, which involves so-called "buy here, pay here" car dealers, will go into effect as soon as Deal signs the legislation.

The newspaper reports that Deal, whose office helped craft the change, is expected to sign the legislation quickly.
