Day in the Life: Bodybuilder

Kendall Herold

Professional Bodybuilder John Sanford spends almost everyday at Fitness Extreme working towards his goal of winning his next show. But that's something that doesn't come easy.

"It's one of the most dedicated sports you have to prepare for," explained Sanford.

That dedication includes everything from several workouts a day, to balancing your nutrition.

"A lot of eating, a lot of training, a lot of dedication. Balancing your work schedule, I have two kids. When you diet for a show, you wake up around 4 AM and do about an hour of cardio in the morning, walking, then you get your meals together," said Sanford.

And Sanford says those meals are the most important part. There's no magic pill, or protein powder, it simply comes down to what you eat: a whopping 7,000 calories per day. But listen to this diet - do you think you could do it?

"My breakfast meal will be 10 egg whites a cup of oats and 3 ounces of chicken. My next meal will be 10 ounces of chicken, half a cup of brown rice, then probably ten ounces of tilapia with a cup of sweet potatoes. That's plain, baked nothing on it."

And his hard work, and simplistic meals, has paid off.

Sanford started his bodybuilding career in February of 2009. He placed second in his first competitive show, and most recently placed first in his class. He'll participate in a national show in May.

And it's the competition at those shows that got Sanford involved in bodybuilding in the first place, and what keeps him pumping iron.

"I love the competition, everything I've always loved athletic wise has been a competitive sport. I love the challenge it takes to get there."
