Law enforcement officials and central Georgians came together today to put an end to crime.
Macon Regional CrimeStoppers held their 10th Annual Benefit to thank those involved. "Just a real big party that says to the criminal out there that we are united together, we are working together, and if you violate the law we are going to put you in jail,” says Jerry Modena, Bibb County Sheriff.
"We couldn't have achieved the success of taking these fugitives off the street without our supporters. Without our sponsors, without our law enforcement partners, without our media partners, and without their support this could not be possible,” says Robert Martin, Macon Regional CrimeStoppers Executive Director.
Since CrimeStoppers began 11 years ago, they have assisted in over 3,000 arrest.
With the help of the community, The Rotary Club of Downtown Macon presented CrimeStoppers with a check of $103,000.00. This money will be put towards paying rewards. "These are just every day working citizens that have contributed money to it and then if someone calls in with a tip that helps get our criminal arrested we take this money and reward them,” says Sheriff Modena.
CrimeStoppers has big plans for protecting Macon’s future. "As we go into 2012 we're partnering with Mercer University...we are putting together a strategic plan to address violence in our community so we have a lot of things on the drawing board and we are looking forward to a new year,” says Warren Selby, Macon-Bibb County CrimeStoppers Chairman of the Board.
Selby says CrimeStoppers made 429 arrests in 2011, and this year it looks like they will surpass that.
