A Cordele teenager is dead after a car hit her on Tuesday outside the city limits of Cordele on a busy highway.
Precious Burns, 16, was killed after a white car ran into her while she was crossing Highway 41 to go to her bus stop.
"When he heard a boom he turned around and he looked at her and he just saw her and his first reaction was screaming he was calling her name," sister of Burns, Brittany Burns said.
Precious was walking with her younger brother across the four lane highway to catch the school bus. Family members said this was her first time crossing the busy highway and it tragically was her last.
"She moved over here because the bus lady told her to stand over there (southbound lane) but this was the first time she ever crossed the street," Brittany said.
Burns was told by Crisp County School District employees to catch the bus by the mailboxes on the northbound lane off Highway 41. However, Brittany said the bus never came to pick Precious up when she stood there. Brittany drove Precious to school on Monday. There, a Crisp County School District employee told her that Precious should catch the bus in another location, across the highway.
"She was walking across the road to stand over here (the southbound lane) and that's when the accident happened."
Burns was pronounced dead at the scene leaving the family in disbelief.
"I feel sad, my family feels sad, and we're trying to get over it,” Brittany said.
However, some family members said they can't let go just yet when the driver of the car wasn’t arrested.
"The people are not trying to do anything about it, letting the man go knowing that he done killed someone and she can't come back,” second cousin, Kenyanna Cantwell said. “They're not holding him and they're saying they can't charge him with anything. They're trying to make it seem like she was standing in the middle of the road but what 16 year-old with good sense would stand in the road. She was crossing the road to get on the bus.”
Now family members said they want the Crisp County School District to look at this accident and make bus stops more accessible for kids.
“Have the children in a safe spot to catch the bus because by this being a highway stuff can happen," Brittany said.
Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.
