Cordele Chemical Spill Cleaned Up, Strong Odor Lingers

NewsCentral Staff

An early Wednesday morning chemical spill in Crisp County has been cleaned up, but the scent of the chemicals was in the air all day long.

Chief Ray Lumsford of the Crisp County Fire Department tells WGXA that the incident occurred at Drexel Chemicals in Cordele when the lids of 12 to 20 drums of insecticide blew off due to pressure in the containers.

It only took crews around three hours to clean the spill but the strong smell of the chemicals hung in the air.

As a precaution, the EPA and GEMA advised nearby residents who are elderly or may have respiratory problems to stay indoors.

Lumsford says the chemical smell is finally beginning to dissipate.

WGXA’s calls to Drexel Chemical headquarters were not returned.
