Community organization reaches out to youth to help them avoid a life of crime

A local organization is doing its best to get kids off the streets and stop the rapid rate of violence in the community.
"Helping Hands, Helping People" hosted its first youth and family day at the Frank Johnson Community Center on Saturday in Unionville. More than 150 people attended the one day event to learn about different opportunities available for kids to become active members in the community. Organization leaders said due to the massive amount of youth shootings over the summer, they wanted to give kids ideas about other alternatives in life instead of crime.
"We felt like we should just reach out to them if they want someone to just be there for them and guide them, direct them in the way they like to be,” organization co-founder, Phillis Malone said. “Like to go in a positive direction."
The organization has partnered up with Macon-Bibb Parks and Recreation and will be hosting the event again at multiple recreation centers in Macon as early as next spring.
