"Christmas In July" Kick Starts Holiday Buying

A local museum hosts an early Christmas sale on Saturday in the Milledgeville Mall to raise money for different projects.

“Georgia’s Old Capital Museum” held the first ever “Christmas in July” where people could buy Christmas goods for cheap from different vendors.

"I always like a good bargain," shopper Kaye Eady said.

Eady and many others at the mall perused the tables of Christmas trinkets looking for what they said is a great sale.

"Early Christmas deals and just see what kind of knick knacks they had out,” shopper Krystal Middlebrooks said.

Groups of people rented tables from "Georgia's Old Capital Museum" to sell their Christmas wares such as stockings, wreaths and statues of old Saint Nick. Former museum president Stephen Stewart said the money raised from the event will help fund different projects throughout the year. Everything being sold on the museum's table was donated.

"We also rented tables to individuals and other civic groups, so they could sell their wares and make money for themselves," Stewart said.

A table goes for $10 each with one man buying seven for all his goods. However, other groups like the while Milledgeville Lions settled for just one to sell their merchandise.

"We are promoting our mops and brooms as a very practical Christmas gift."

Stewart said all vendors get to keep the money they make from the sales. People like Eady, who found a door ornament for two dollars, said they're taking advantage of the great deals.

"The prices are not bad at all, to me it's more like a yard sale price than a store price," Eady said.

Stewart said he hopes to bring in about $400 for the museum after the event. He said he looks forward to continuing the new tradition next year.
