Central Georgia Celebrates 70th Otis Redding Celebration

Larry Spruill

It was a star studded event as music lovers from all over came out to celebrate musical giant Otis Redding. “I was kind of following his footsteps. He worked out of home. He lived in Macon for a while and he was just one of my biggest inspirations,” says Wet Willie’s lead singer Jimmy Hall.

Whether or not you’re from Central Georgia or even the Peach State at all, chance are you heard of Otis, but figuring out what’s your favorite song, might be the problem.

Even though Otis Redding is no longer here with us, many people in Central Georgia and all over the world still say that his legend will continue to live on.

A red carpet event brought in several honorees to celebrate 70 years of Otis Redding.

All of the Redding’s’ children and family members were present for the tribute and even local officials showed their respect and appreciation for the legend. “I’m very pleased that a very son of ours is being recognized tonight and this community remembers that,” says Bibb County Chairman Sam Hart.

Attendees like Gary Arthurs, traveled as far as from England, to honor a man who continues to bring people together. “I think it’s not only the music. I think if you just read about Otis the man, to me he’s great.”

The 70th celebration will continue on Sunday in Downtown Macon.
