Buyer Beware: New Credit Card Surcharge in Georgia

NewsCentral Staff

A new fee may be appearing on consumers credit card receipts.

It's called "merchant surcharging.” Some local businesses are now charging customers the cost of processing their credit purchases. This can be up to four percent on each transaction. In the past, retailers paid the processing fee each time a credit card was swiped. However, now the retailer is passing it on to customers.

"It's a great opportunity for consumers to understand that businesses can pass this on but consumer can also take this as an opportunity to learn, to look at all the receipts and know exactly what they're being charged,” Central Georgia Better Business Bureau CEO Kelvin Collins said,

Businesses are required to let customers know that there will be a surcharge. It can be in the form of a sign. The surcharge does not apply to debit or pre-paid cards.
