SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Paul Broun says he wants to see automatic budget cuts take effect next month despite warnings from the Pentagon that the cutbacks would devastate the military.
Two days after launching his campaign for the Senate seat being vacated by fellow Republican Saxby Chambliss, Broun of Athens said Friday he believes the automatic cuts are the only way federal spending will be seriously reduced under President Barack Obama. He told The Associated Press: "I want to see it go into place."
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is trying to head off $42.7 billion in automatic cuts. He said Thursday those cuts were designed to be "so nuts" that Democrats and Republicans would have to cut a deal on spending.
Broun says he's confident military funding would be restored later.
