Backpack giveaway in Warner Robins draws large crowd

NewsCentral Staff

The line stretched around the block Friday at a free school supplies giveaway.

The Warner Robins Housing Authority stuffed 1,500 backpacks last Friday and gave them away July 20th at a back to school bash. Book bags were handed out to kids in elementary, middle and high schools and free haircuts were also available.

Executive Director Sheryl Frazier says the giveaway this year is especially important due to the economy.

"I had a young lady come up to me and she said 'You know, normally I would be on of the people who is donating, but this year I couldn't afford to give school supplies. So, I appreciate it is what you do.' So, we do this so that we can give back to the community," said Frazier.

The backpacks were filled with all the essentials a student would need before heading back to school. The Housing Authority also partnered with other agencies to make the event possible.
