"Back to School Blast" Supplies Students

NewsCentral Staff

Central Georgia students received new gear on Saturday as some local groups helped them get ready for the school year.

Lines were out the door as more than 400 people came out for the first ever "Back to School Blast" at Freedom Park .The free event offered health screenings, a bag of school supplies, and allowed kids to pick out clothes for the upcoming school year. Event organizers said they want to help families struggling in the tough economy.

"Families today are really hurting and really in trouble from a fiscal stand point and they need as many breaks and opportunities to get help as possible,” supervisor Clarence Thomas Jr. said. “And so the recreation center and Bibb County Parks and recreation is a venue that can provide the kind of help.”

All clothing and supplies were donated by community members and organizers said they want to continue the event again next year.
