Goodwill's Culinary School Helps People Find Jobs

Linnie Supall

When you hear about Goodwill Industries, you probably think about its retail stores and the deep discounts they offer, but one location in Middle Georgia has so much more.

Jim Stiff, President/CEO of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia said, “The employment rate sits at about 10 percent. So many people are hurting because of this. That’s why Goodwill is trying to help people find their gifts and go to work in Middle Georgia.”

The Goodwill of Middle Georgia is now tackling those rising unemployment numbers by catering to your job interests and offering a program that's one of a kind.

Jim Stiff added, “Our Goodwill location is the only Goodwill in the country that has a state licensed culinary institute called Polly's Hospitality Institute. It’s a 6 month program and you become certified through the American Culinary Federation.”

So far the Polly’s Hospitality Institute has received great reviews from its students.

Victoria Anderson, a student at Poly’s Hospitality Institute explained, “I heard about this program from my mom and decided to check it out. I ended up falling in love with it!”

Gary Wesley is also a student at the Polly’s Hospitality Institute. Wesley added, “We learn a variety of skills such as knife cuts, sauces, and preparing chicken. It's a very interesting course.”

These courses help students land a promising career for the future.

Gary Wesley continued, “I'm hoping to enter a career as an Executive Chef. Since I've been here I've landed a couple of nice jobs. One was at Red Lobster, and now I'm at the Marriott Hotel. They give you the skills you need to learn a culinary occupation and advance.”

Victoria Anderson mentioned, “The chefs here really teach you a lot. It's very intimate like a family.”
