Officer Shot in Hunting Accident

A USDA Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer was fatally shot in a hunting accident on Friday at the Ocmulgee Bluff Equestrian Recreation Area in Jasper County.

37-year-old Christopher Arby Upton of Monroe was on patrol when two individuals were hunting coyote with high-powered night vision rifles and mistook the officer for game.

After the shooting the individuals called 911 and reported the incident.
The incident is being investigated jointly by the Forest Service
and GDNR WRD.

Upton was a 4 year veteran of the Forest Service. He is survived by his wife and 4-year old daughter.

Prayers go out to Chris's family and friends. He was a friend and fellow officer, and was the 1st of 2 friends and fellow officers I'm mourning this weekend. God bless the Upton family.
